AI Is Getting More Capable. Are We?
A human-centered roadmap for growing organizational capacity alongside artificial intelligence.
“A tool waits for instructions. A teammate brings context, asks questions, drafts, and pushes your thinking.” —Bryan Setser
Four years ago, generative AI could draft an email or answer a basic question. Today, it can conduct research, reason through complex problems, complete multistep assignments, and produce professional-quality work.
AI is getting more capable. Our organizations must become more capable, too.
Better technology alone will not create better decisions, stronger teams, or more equitable outcomes. That requires people who understand the technology, question its work, and use it responsibly.
This week, Wayfinder guest writer Adam Renfro shares what that model feels like from inside the Talent Squad, and why independent experts often do their best work when their expertise is connected to an organization and a purpose they believe in.
Keep Human Judgment at the Center
AI can generate an answer in seconds. People must decide whether that answer is accurate, useful, fair, and appropriate.
You have to know enough about a subject to recognize when AI gets it wrong. That includes spotting weak arguments, false citations, biased recommendations, and faulty calculations.
Organizations can strengthen that judgment by teaching people to:
Ask clear questions and provide meaningful context.
Verify claims, sources, assumptions, and calculations.
Identify bias and missing perspectives.
Explain how AI contributed to the work.
Make decisions they can defend.
AI can accelerate production. People remain responsible for the result.
Turn Individual Learning Into Shared Capacity
A few enthusiastic employees using AI well does not make an AI-ready organization. That happens when learning, access, and responsible practices extend across the organization.
Setser Group’s four-phase model provides a path:
Foundation: Establish a shared vision, governance, and responsible-use practices.
Organizational Capacity: Develop AI-fluent leaders and teams through training, coaching, and workflow redesign.
Innovation and Community: Apply that capacity to services, partnerships, and community needs.
Scale and Leadership: Measure results, improve practices, and build AI fluency into the culture.
This work must include more than executives, specialists, and early adopters. People throughout the organization need the opportunity to learn, contribute, and lead from their seats.
That is how AI capability becomes human capacity.
A Roadmap Worth Discussing
This is the path we see from early AI experimentation to lasting organizational capacity. Where would you place your organization today, and what would it take to move confidently into the next phase?
The answers will look different for every team. But the work begins with the same commitment: keep people in the loop, build capability across the organization, and use AI to create broader opportunity.
